Day to day programme
Day 1: El Cambio Volunteer House to Lake Mburo National Park
Your adventure begins with a relaxed breakfast at the El Cambio Volunteer House. Over breakfast, your safari guide welcomes you and gives a general briefing: the itinerary, the day's programme, safari etiquette, wildlife expectations, photography, accommodation arrangements and the journey ahead.
Then depart on the scenic journey to Lake Mburo National Park through the changing landscapes of southwestern Uganda: rural communities, agricultural areas and countryside, with comfort stops for refreshments, photography, stretching and restroom breaks.
On arrival, check in at Kigarama Wilderness Hotel and enjoy lunch. The afternoon is reserved for relaxation and private time.
Later in the afternoon, head out on a short evening game drive as the temperatures cool and the light softens. Possible sightings include giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, buffaloes, warthogs, waterbucks and other plains wildlife, and the golden-hour scenery is excellent for photography.
After dinner, a short night game drive shows Lake Mburo from an entirely different perspective, looking for nocturnal wildlife and listening to the sounds of the African bush.
Overnight: Kigarama Wilderness Hotel. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Day 2: Romantic Walking Safari & Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
The morning begins with a lazy breakfast at the hotel, taken at a relaxed pace before the morning's intimate wilderness experience.
Then head out on a guided walking safari. Moving through the wilderness on foot, you appreciate the landscape at a more intimate level, with your guide interpreting animal tracks, vegetation, birdlife and the smaller details of the ecosystem. One of the highlights is the chance to meet giraffes and zebras in their natural environment. Where conditions and wildlife behaviour permit, we create carefully managed opportunities to pause for romantic photographs and videos together against the Ugandan landscape.
Return to the hotel, collect your luggage and check out, then begin the scenic drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Lunch is at a carefully selected local restaurant, a chance to try authentic Ugandan cuisine.
As you enter Queen Elizabeth National Park, enjoy a short evening game drive on the way to the lodge, an introduction to the park's savannah landscapes and wildlife.
At Acacia Mweya Wilderness Lodge, the lodge team helps you check in and introduces the property. After settling into your room, enjoy dinner around the campfire beneath the evening sky. Your guide then briefs you on the following day.
Overnight: Acacia Mweya Wilderness Lodge. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Day 3: Kasenyi Plains, Kazinga Channel & Ishasha
Today combines one of the safari's most romantic experiences with an extended exploration of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Begin with a lazy floating breakfast in the pool, arranged in line with the hotel's pool facilities, requirements and safety guidelines, a deliberately indulgent start to an adventurous day.
After a comfortable transfer to the starting point, explore the Kasenyi Plains on a morning game drive. The plains are renowned for wildlife, with chances to see elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, antelopes, warthogs, lions and many bird species. Your guide chooses suitable routes based on wildlife activity, recent sightings and road conditions, with time for observation and photography.
After lunch and a rest, head to the Kazinga Channel for an afternoon boat cruise. It gives an exceptional perspective of the park, with large concentrations of hippos, Nile crocodiles, African buffaloes, elephants, waterbucks and other antelopes, and numerous water birds along the shores.
After the cruise, rather than returning by the same route, travel south through the park, passing the Maramagambo area on the way to the Ishasha sector. This section offers a different perspective of Queen Elizabeth, with changing vegetation, landscapes and habitats.
Continue to Enjojo Lodge in Ishasha, check in and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Dinner is served at the lodge, followed by a relaxed evening.
Overnight: Enjojo Lodge. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Day 4: Ishasha to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Enjoy breakfast at Enjojo Lodge before beginning the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Today is one of the most dramatic transitions of the safari: you leave the open savannah of Queen Elizabeth and gradually enter the lush, mountainous rainforest around Bwindi, a reminder of how quickly Uganda's ecosystems change.
Along the route you pass small-scale farms, plantations, terraced hills, rural communities and farmers working their land, with beautiful highland scenery. Lunch is at a local restaurant, a chance to try the flavours of the region.
As you approach Buhoma, the landscape becomes increasingly lush and mountainous. Check in at Haven Lodge Buhoma and enjoy the atmosphere of the forest. Your guide briefs you on the lodge, the next day's gorilla trekking, departure arrangements and practical preparations.
Dinner is followed by a storytelling evening around the campfire, with stories about the forest, conservation, local communities and the mountain gorillas, an atmospheric evening before the next day's adventure.
Overnight: Haven Lodge Buhoma. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Day 5: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: Gorilla Trekking
Today is the most adventurous day of the safari. After breakfast at the lodge, go to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) briefing point for essential information on gorilla trekking etiquette, forest safety, conservation guidelines and appropriate behaviour around the gorillas. You are allocated a habituated gorilla family according to the day's arrangements, and the guide and UWA rangers prepare you for the trek.
A short transfer takes you to the starting point, and you begin your trek into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to the mountain gorillas. The duration and difficulty vary considerably depending on where the gorilla family has moved. The forest itself becomes part of the adventure, and your ranger and guide help you read the signs and tracks along the way.
Eventually the moment arrives when the gorilla family is found. You spend time observing these animals in their natural habitat, following UWA guidelines. The experience is intimate, emotional and unforgettable.
After the trek, return to the starting area, where you receive your gorilla trekking certificate, where applicable, as a memento. Lunch follows, then a return to Haven Lodge Buhoma. The rest of the evening is for relaxation after the physical demands of the trek. Dinner follows.
Overnight: Haven Lodge Buhoma. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Day 6: Bwindi to Lake Bunyonyi
After the previous day's adventure, start with a lazy breakfast at Haven Lodge Buhoma, taking your time in the peaceful forest surroundings. Then load the vehicle and begin the scenic journey to Lake Bunyonyi, the "Switzerland of Uganda".
This is one of the most beautiful sections of the safari, through highlands of dramatic hills, cultivated terraces, plantations, farms and rural communities, with excellent opportunities for photography. Comfort stops are built in for restrooms, stretching, refreshments, photography and viewpoints, and your guide comments on the landscapes, communities and agricultural practices along the route.
At BirdNest Resort, check in and enjoy lunch. The rest of the afternoon is for true, authentic relaxation, a complete change of pace after several days of wildlife and adventure. Enjoy the lake views, take photographs, spend quality time together or simply enjoy the calm of Lake Bunyonyi. As the sun sets over the hills, dinner follows, with the evening reserved for relaxation and private time.
Overnight: BirdNest Resort. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Day 7: A Day at Lake Bunyonyi
Today is dedicated entirely to Lake Bunyonyi. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast with views of the lake and surrounding hills. The day can be tailored to your preferred style of travel.
Option A, lake adventure: choose from activities such as a boat tour around the lake, kayaking, a traditional canoe experience, zip-lining to and from the island, island exploration and scenic photography. Activities are arranged according to the operating schedule, weather and availability.
Option B, full-day relaxation: dedicate the whole day to a long breakfast, time at the resort, the lake views, photographs, reading and uninterrupted time together. Lunch is at the resort and the afternoon stays open for personal time.
As evening falls, enjoy the tranquillity of the lake. Dinner is the setting for a final romantic evening in the highlands.
Overnight: BirdNest Resort. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Day 8: Lake Bunyonyi to the El Cambio Volunteer House
Enjoy a relaxed final breakfast at BirdNest Resort and take in your last views of Lake Bunyonyi. After check-out, load your luggage into the vehicle and begin the scenic journey to the El Cambio Volunteer House.
The journey is one last chance to appreciate the landscapes of southwestern Uganda. There are comfortable stops for restrooms, stretching, refreshments, photography and viewpoints, and a carefully selected lunch stop. Your guide continues to share information about the communities, agriculture and landscapes along the route.
Continue to the El Cambio Volunteer House, where you are expected to arrive in the late evening. Your guide makes sure the journey ends comfortably and helps with final arrangements. This marks the end of an extraordinary eight-day journey through western Uganda.
