What made you start this company?

I used to drive for other people's agencies. I watched them rush guests through park gates like cargo. One evening, driving back from Murchison Falls, I caught four guests in the rearview mirror. They'd saved for years for that trip. They looked disappointed. Not because the animals didn't show up. Because nobody had shown them the place they came for.

I quit that night. My uncle spent years mentoring me. I spent months watching how the best operators in Southern and East Africa actually ran their trips, then put every shilling I had into starting Rays Safaris.

Has it always gone smoothly?

No. Early on I brought in two friends as shareholders. I figured they cared about guests the way I did. They didn't. They cut corners, and guests noticed.

I bought them out, ended the partnership, and built the company around one rule: guest safety and satisfaction don't get negotiated. Not on any trip, for any reason.

What does a Rays Safaris trip actually look like?

Not a checklist. On a 17 day trip through Uganda with a family named Minke and family, we didn't just watch wildlife from a vehicle. We visited local villages, cooked meals with host families, sat around fires trading stories.

At the airport on their last day, Minke's kids cried because they didn't want to leave. I was standing right there. Nobody paid us to say that happened.
