Day to day programme

Day 1: El Cambio Volunteer House to Lake Mburo National Park

After breakfast at the El Cambio Volunteer House, depart on the scenic journey towards Lake Mburo National Park. The drive introduces you to the changing landscapes of southwestern Uganda, passing rural communities, agricultural areas and countryside.

On arrival, check in at Kigarama Wilderness Hotel and enjoy lunch. The afternoon is for relaxation: refresh after the journey, enjoy the peaceful surroundings and, if you wish, swim at the hotel.

Later in the afternoon, head out on a combined short evening and night game drive. The evening drive begins as temperatures cool and wildlife becomes more active, with possible sightings of giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, buffaloes, warthogs, waterbucks and other plains wildlife. As darkness sets in, a short night drive shows Lake Mburo from a different perspective and offers a chance to look for nocturnal wildlife.

Return to Kigarama Wilderness Hotel for dinner and a peaceful night.

Overnight: Kigarama Wilderness Hotel. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.

Day 2: Walking Safari & Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy one of the most intimate wildlife experiences of the safari: a guided walking safari in Lake Mburo National Park. Exploring on foot lets you appreciate the smaller details of the ecosystem, and your guide interprets animal tracks, vegetation, birdlife and other signs of wildlife. Depending on conditions, you may see giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, buffaloes, warthogs and waterbucks. The walk also offers wonderful opportunities for photography and memorable moments together.

Return to the hotel, collect your luggage and check out, then begin the scenic journey to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Lunch is at a carefully selected local restaurant, a chance to enjoy authentic Ugandan cuisine.

On arrival in the Queen Elizabeth area, go to the Kazinga Channel for the afternoon boat cruise. The two-hour cruise gives an exceptional perspective of the park, with large concentrations of hippos, Nile crocodiles, African buffaloes, elephants, waterbucks and other antelopes, and numerous water birds along the shores.

After the cruise, check in at Acacia Mweya Wilderness Lodge and settle in. Dinner is served at the lodge in a comfortable, romantic atmosphere, and your guide briefs you on the following day.

Overnight: Acacia Mweya Wilderness Lodge. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.

Day 3: Queen Elizabeth National Park, Ishasha & Bwindi

Begin the morning with a lazy floating breakfast in the pool, arranged according to the lodge's facilities, requirements and safety guidelines.

After breakfast, head out on a morning game drive across the famous Kasenyi Plains, with chances to see elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, antelopes, warthogs, lions and a wide range of birds. Your guide chooses routes based on wildlife activity, recent sightings and road conditions, with time for observation and photography.

Continue south through Queen Elizabeth National Park to the Ishasha sector, famous for its tree-climbing lions. Keep your eyes open for these cats resting in the branches of fig and other trees. Sightings are never guaranteed with wild animals, but the search is part of the excitement.

As you approach Bwindi, the landscape changes from open savannah to lush, mountainous rainforest, passing small-scale farms, plantations, terraced hills and rural communities. Lunch is at a local restaurant along the way.

Arrive in Buhoma and check in at Haven Lodge Buhoma. Your guide briefs you on the next day's gorilla trekking and practical preparations. Dinner is followed by a storytelling evening around the campfire, with stories about the forest, conservation, local communities and the mountain gorillas.

Overnight: Haven Lodge Buhoma. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking & Lake Bunyonyi

This is the most adventurous and emotional day of the safari. After breakfast at the lodge, go to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) briefing point for essential information on gorilla trekking etiquette, forest safety, conservation guidelines and appropriate behaviour around the gorillas. You are then allocated a habituated gorilla family according to the day's arrangements.

A short transfer takes you to the starting point, and you begin your trek into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The duration and difficulty vary considerably depending on where the gorilla family has moved. Your ranger and guide interpret the forest ecosystem and the signs and tracks along the way. When the family is found, you spend time observing these animals in their natural habitat, following UWA guidelines. The experience is intimate, emotional and unforgettable.

After the trek, return to the starting area, where you receive your gorilla trekking certificate, where applicable, as a memento. Lunch follows.

After lunch, collect your luggage and drive to Lake Bunyonyi, known as the "Switzerland of Uganda", through highlands of dramatic hills, cultivated terraces, plantations and farms, with comfort stops for refreshments, photography and scenic viewpoints.

Check in at BirdNest Resort and relax after the day's trekking. Dinner follows, with the evening reserved for relaxation and private time.

Overnight: BirdNest Resort. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.

Day 5: Lake Bunyonyi & Return to the El Cambio Volunteer House

Start with a relaxed breakfast at BirdNest Resort, looking over the lake and surrounding hills. Before the journey back, enjoy a short Lake Bunyonyi experience, depending on time, weather and operating schedules: a boat tour, a traditional canoe experience, kayaking, island exploration, photography or relaxing by the lake. Guests who prefer a slower morning can simply relax at the resort.

After check-out, begin the scenic journey to the El Cambio Volunteer House, with comfort stops for restrooms, stretching, refreshments, photography and viewpoints, and a carefully selected lunch stop. The journey ends at the El Cambio Volunteer House, with memories of wildlife, rainforest, mountain gorillas, lakes, local communities and romantic moments.

Meals: Breakfast & lunch.
