Nyerere National Park – Selous Game Reserve
Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, is one of Africa’s largest and wildest protected areas. In 2019, the northern photographic area of Selous became Nyerere National Park, while the southern part still carries the Selous name. Travellers may hear both names used, but all regular safaris take place in Nyerere.
Dominated by the Rufiji River, the park offers a beautiful mix of rivers, lakes, forests, and savannah. Wildlife is abundant, with elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, lions, leopards, and large populations of hippos and crocodiles. African wild dogs are also regularly seen.
Nyerere is known for its diverse safari activities: game drives, boat safaris, and walking safaris, offering a varied and authentic wilderness experience far from the crowds.
